Immerse yourself in the real Rio de Janeiro by staying in the favela of Rocinha, a safe urban community vibrant with music, food, art, and fun. Share a spacious, three-bedroom home with a local host family and other international guests while enjoying stunning views of the ocean, mountains, Christ the Redeemer, and the entire favela. Enjoy many cultural and adventure activities in or near Rocinha, including hang gliding, surfing, rock climbing, trekking, favela walking tours, samba, martial arts, and "funk carioca" parties. (We can even get you discounts--just ask!) Moreover, located in the heart of Rio's exclusive South Zone, you'll be a short van, bus, or taxi ride away from the beaches of Ipanema, Copacabana, and Leblon, Rio's downtown, and the alternative scene of Botafogo.

The large house is located in the centre of Rocinha, with vast views overlooking Sao Conrado beach, Christ the Redeemer and Gavea Rock. The house also includes fast WI-FI, a large, fully-equipped kitchen, an expansive living room area with many couches and a TV. On the floor above the main living area is the studio guesthouse and a vast rooftop deck with an outdoor shower and lots of space to tan and relax.

Rocinha is Latin America's largest favela with 300,000 residents and much culture and fun to offer you. The community brings together residents from all ethnicities, dialects, and regions of Brazil. Yes, residents are generally low-income, and the community is often neglected by the government. Nonetheless, what people lack in financial wealth, they more than make up for in hospitality, authenticity, and resilience.
There's lots for you to do in and near Rocinha, including:
• Take a walking tour through a favela led by English-speaking resident-guides, catching a breathtaking rooftop view, descending through a maze of alleyways, and learning about favela history, culture, and everyday life.
• Check out a Carnaval rehearsal by an official samba group representing the favela
• Rent a surf board and catch some waves at nearby São Conrado beach
• Hike up the Morro Dois Irmãos ("Two Brothers Hill"), and watch the sunrise, overlooking all of Rio
• Grab a chilled beer and salty snack at one of Vidigal's many botecos (bars)

There are public buses (each about $3.80 BRL) that stop within a 1-minute walk of the house. Passing every few minutes, this public transportation goes to the lively neighborhoods of Leblon, Ipanema, Copacabana, Botafogo, and Leme.

Your host Maria, married mother of 5, is a popular resident of Rocinha, known throughout the neighbourhood as Mao Santa (Holy Hand), for her healing powers using natural remedies. One of her many contributions to the community include her recent work with pregnant teenagers between the ages of 10 and 16 who had been disowned by their mothers, seeking to repair the relationship between mother and daughter. Maria also goes under the name and persona of Mulher Maracuja, or Pasionfruit Woman, to counter the materialistic and superficial Brazilian celebrity figures in a satirical way. Her project spreads smiles throughout various places in Brazil, hospitals, schools, NGO's etc. With the money Maria earns from hosting with Favela Experience she intends to improve her home, send her children to better schools, get better health care plans for the family and open a non-profit eatery that provides meals for Rocinha’s many residents who receive treatment for serious diseases and are weak and unable to provide proper nutrition for themselves

Rocinha's 24/7 police protect the community as part of a government program introduced before the 2014 FIFA World Cup. In reality, tourists are safer in Rocinha than in some of Rio's most "touristy" areas. Unlike other parts of the city, you'll feel a real sense of community in the favelas, where everyone looks out for their neighbors.
You can maximize your safety if you:
• Don't take photos of people without permission
• Never use or buy illegal drugs
• Consume alcohol in moderation
• Listen to your hosts about safety
