THE EXPERIENCE
Immerse yourself in the real Rio de Janeiro by staying in the favela of Rocinha, a safe urban community vibrant with music, food, art, and fun. You'll share the bathroom in the living room area with other guests and the family as well as the common lounging, dining, and kitchen area. Everyone can use the fast WI-FI and flat-screen TV as long as you're considerate of the other guests and Araujo family. Enjoy many cultural and adventure activities in or near Rocinha, including hang gliding, surfing, rock climbing, trekking, favela walking tours, samba, martial arts, and "funk carioca" parties. (We can even get you discounts--just ask!) Moreover, located in the heart of Rio's exclusive South Zone, you'll be a short van, bus, or taxi ride away from the beaches of Ipanema, Copacabana, and Leblon, Rio's downtown, and the alternative scene of Botafogo.

THE NEIGHBORHOOD
Rocinha is Latin America's largest favela with 300,000 residents and much culture and fun to offer you. The community brings together residents from all ethnicities, dialects, and regions of Brazil. Yes, residents are generally low-income, and the community is often neglected by the government. Nonetheless, what people lack in financial wealth, they more than make up for in hospitality, authenticity, and resilience.
There's lots for you to do in and near Rocinha, including:
• Take a walking tour through a favela led by English-speaking resident-guides, catching a breathtaking rooftop view, descending through a maze of alleyways, and learning about favela history, culture, and everyday life.
• Check out a Carnaval rehearsal by an official samba group representing the favela
• Rent a surf board and catch some waves at nearby São Conrado beach
• Hike up the Morro Dois Irmãos ("Two Brothers Hill"), and watch the sunrise, overlooking all of Rio
• Grab a chilled beer and salty snack at one of Vidigal's many botecos (bars)

TRANSPORTATION
There are public buses (each about $3.80 BRL) that stop within a 1-minute walk of the house. Passing every few minutes, this public transportation goes to the lively neighborhoods of Leblon, Ipanema, Copacabana, Botafogo, and Leme.

THE HOST
Your hosts who'll sleep in their own room are the Araujo family, consisting of Rafael and Priscila as well as their two boys, 18 years old and eight years old. Rafael is a political activist and landlord in the favela while Priscila manages the home and children. No one in the family speaks English, so it's the optimal environment to immerse yourself in Portuguese. The family is excited to share their home with guests from around the world and would love to share meals with you (but will ask you contribute money if they cook for you). Priscila can also arrange to wash your clothes for an extra fee per laundry load. Finally, the family keeps two cats and a tiny dog in the home.

SAFETY
Rocinha's 24/7 police protect the community as part of a government program introduced before the 2014 FIFA World Cup. In reality, tourists are safer in Rocinha than in some of Rio's most "touristy" areas. Unlike other parts of the city, you'll feel a real sense of community in the favelas, where everyone looks out for their neighbors.
You can maximize your safety if you:
• Don't take photos of people without permission
• Never use or buy illegal drugs
• Consume alcohol in moderation
• Listen to your hosts about safety
